What is Green Energy?

Nuclear
Nuclear power is being touted as a “green” energy
source, and it certainly does not have the carbon footprint of,
say, an old-fashioned oil-fired power plant. But nuclear is not
carbon-neutral when the emissions associated with mining uranium,
refining and enriching the ore, building and operating reactors,
and transporting and storing nuclear waste are taken into account.
And then there’s that finite fuel source, uranium. Today,
it’s estimated there’s only enough uranium production
to meet 65% of current needs, and uranium prices have jumped nearly
ten-fold per pound from just a year ago. In the balance, then,
nuclear will be a costlier replacement for fossil fuels than renewable
energy solutions. Wikipedia clearly outlines the issues surrounding
the use of nuclear materials to generate electricity.
